HSA & FSA Eligibility

Aura Storm, Aura Wind and Aura Breeze air purifiers may be eligible for reimbursement through a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) with a Letter of Medical Necessity from your healthcare provider.

How HSA and FSA eligibility works for air purifiers

The IRS treats an air purifier as a medical expense when a licensed healthcare provider recommends it to treat or relieve a specific medical condition, such as asthma, allergies, COPD or another respiratory condition. Most HSA and FSA administrators document this with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Without one, an air purifier is considered a general-health item and is usually not reimbursable.

Your plan administrator makes the final decision on every claim. Safe Steps cannot guarantee that a purchase will be approved.

How to use your HSA or FSA for an Aura purchase

  1. Get a Letter of Medical Necessity. Ask your doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant for a signed letter stating your diagnosis, that an air purifier is recommended to treat it, and the length of time it is needed (one year is typical). Many plans provide their own LMN form.
  2. Place your order. Pay with any credit or debit card at checkout. We do not currently accept HSA or FSA cards directly.
  3. Save your receipt. Your order confirmation email is an itemized receipt showing the product, date and amount paid. If your plan needs a different format, email info@safestepsusa.com with your order number and we will send one.
  4. Submit a claim. Send the receipt and the Letter of Medical Necessity to your HSA or FSA administrator using their claim form, app or portal. Reimbursement is usually paid to you directly.

Good to know

  • FDA 510(k) clearance of the Aura Storm does not by itself make it HSA or FSA eligible; a Letter of Medical Necessity is still needed.
  • Letters of Medical Necessity usually expire after one year. Replacement filters bought later may need a current letter.
  • Keep copies of your receipt and letter for your tax records.
  • Facility and bulk orders paid by a business are not personal medical expenses and are not covered by this page.
